<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I THANK Ms Michelle Zhang for her suggestion to increase train frequency along the North-South Line (Nov 7).
Over the years, SMRT has increased train service frequencies during peak and off peak hours for both the East-West and North-South lines. Our train service frequencies for both lines currently range between two and five minutes during the peak hours. This allowable headway takes into consideration the need to maintain a minimum distance between trains.
On Ms Zhang's observation that southbound trains are generally crowded by the time they reach Yishun MRT station, we wish to share that the average passenger loading at Yishun MRT station between 7.40am and 8.10am is about 1,000 passengers on average. This is below LTA's standard of 1,600 passengers.
Trains may appear crowded when passengers do not move to the centre of the train car to allow others to board. To encourage gracious behaviour, SMRT invests in year-long courtesy and safety programmes. In-train and station announcements also serve to reinforce gracious behaviour among commuters.
We would like to assure Ms Zhang that we are committed to providing passengers with comfortable train rides, while optimising train service frequencies to meet their travel demands.

How is it possible for SMRT to create the problems ?

If the passengers don't take the train, there will not any crowd lah. People, be sensible, you are creating your own problems, how can you blame the service provider ???

LOL

Well, of course people like Ms Low won’t know. Maybe SMRT also prefer not to know. Or perhaps they just pretend that they do not know. It is so much easier to fault something which is visible, isn’t it?

Why are passengers reluctant to move to the centre of the train car? Simple! Trains arriving at longer intervals often result in being over crowded. And I mean the trains are REALLY crowded, not 'APPEAR crowded' as claimed by Ms Low. Thus most passengers prefer to just stand near to the trains’ doors when they are 'first in' for 2 logical reasons:-
1. To avoid having to ‘bulldoze’ their way to alight from trains
2. Trains doors close too fast leaving passengers little time if they have to force their way to the exits.

No denial, there are minorities who lack graciousness but if majority of the passengers are crowding near doors, it can’t simply be due to gracious behaviours alone.

SMRT is indeed SMaRT to simply blame the passengers when the root of the problem is the frequency of their trains.

SMRT think only few hours in weekday got peak hour. Actual fact, weekend more pack than weekday when many people go out with family.
When your basic definition of peak n non-peak is wrong, nothing will work..no use lah..give up oready.

Anyone has a photo of Ms. Low. If she represents the company then she should also have the courage to show her face with her official reply.

This is below LTA's standard of 1,600 passengers.

Does LTA has any credibility to set standards when they are part of the pap's tools to exploit singaporeans...

This superficial, brushing away underlying problems kind of statement seems quite commonly used in most official replies to those concerned readers.

that's totally rubbish. most passenger will rush to the middle to avoid having to give way or being push near the door while others are boarding or alighting. And being in the middle is easier to get a seat if someone is to get up.

OBVIOUSLY THESE MANAGEMENT LEVEL KNOW NUTS ABOUT MRT AND HAVE NOT TAKEN A RIDE DURING PEAK HOURS.
