It's a very old bike left behind by someone important to me....I don't know if the the bike is cheap or expensive...but it's definitely an old bike...I never see this kind of brake disc before.
Is your bicycle expensive ?
Shimano gear is not cheapIt's a very old bike left behind by someone important to me....I don't know if the the bike is cheap or expensive...but it's definitely an old bike...
I call it a drum brake, but others call it liner brake. You need to loosen the nut that's clamping on the brake cable, then pull the brake cable back about 1cm or so. Then tighten the nut. Here's a video I specially made for you.View attachment 217360

The brake lining has worn out. You can try to loosen the crimping nut, pull and extend the steel cable and then tighten the crimping nut again. However, in most cases, it won't do much help because the brake lining is too worn out. The brake lining is also difficult to buy in most cases. If you go to a bicycle shop, they'll most likely ask you to convert to the conventional brake pad type, but the end result is usually no good.View attachment 217360

Fwah you also know ah! Don't teach him too much, let him go drifting on his bicycle when the brake doesn't bite. The brake lining has worn out. Seriously, you should change your bicycle lah. Frame rusty, hub and spokes rusty, bolts and nuts also rusty. OMG!Ok...tomorrow I shall try this method to tighten this drum brake.
This is an old gift from someone who has departed, so i cannot throw away... I have my own trifold brompton which i use to do long distances ...but once in a while, I will take this old bike out for a ride just to keep the mechanism moving... but recently, I find the back wheel brakes like must press very hard...I think something is loose... :(Seriously, you should change your bicycle lah. My wife's lady bicycle used to have this kind of brake also. I had dismantled it before so I know its working principle.Fwah you also know ah! Don't teach him too much, let him go drifting on his bicycle when the brake doesn't bite.![]()
So it has sentimental value. You should restore it, change out the rusty bits or at least polish the rust out. Lubricate the moving parts too. Glad you have a brompton, its Sturmey-Archer internal gear hub is smooth and hardy. This is an old gift from someone who has departed, so i cannot throw away...
