Arrested after kneeling outside Istana
December 27, 2008

IT was an odd scene.

A man holding a board was spotted yesterday afternoon kneeling in front of the Istana gate.

Witnesses said the man had parked his silver car nearby and headed towards the gate.

His actions immediately attracted the attention of the policemen guarding the gate.

Said Mr Roy Teh, a passer-by who was walking towards Concorde Hotel: 'I noticed a crowd of 20 people watching something happening at the Istana entrance.

'When I saw the man, I thought it was a protest by someone who had lost a lot of money from the economic downturn. It was a little unusual to hold a protest at the Istana.'

Mr Teh, 33, who stood about 25m away from the man, took some pictures.

Added the property agent: 'The police officers were talking to him. But I could not hear what was being said or see what was written on the board.

'Soon, more police cars arrived.'

The police received a call at 3.25pm about a man causing a nuisance at the Istana gate.

A police spokesman said a man was arrested for suspected drug consumption.

The man did not put up a struggle during his arrest.

Strangely, another witness said there was nothing written on the board.

What was he doing there?
Perhaps he was asking for the country's resources to be allocated more equitably.

Sadly, you can't write anything on the sandwich board because:

1. If he has kangaroo picture on it, it is contempt of court.
2. If he comment on Prata man, he will be under sedition charge.
3. He can't say anything, he will be charge for entertaining without a valid license.
4. He has to kneel and not march into istana, marching protest is only allowed in Hong Lim Park and no where else.
5. He has to kneel and not sit, otherwise, he will be misconstrued as Falungong protestor/follower doing a sit-in protest since it is banned in Singapore.

Basically, you are not allow to protest or voice out in a Communist controlled democratic country - Singapore.
