SINGAPORE: The official SG50 book, Living the Singapore Story: Celebrating our 50 Years 1965-2015, was launched on Friday (May 15), and 10,000 copies have been printed.
It features 58 Singaporeans, including an actor, an athlete, a general, a hawker, a nurse, a scientist, a teacher and an urban planner, to express the "characteristic grit and determination of Singaporeans from all walks of life", the National Library Board (NLB) said in its press release.
The book also showcases personal and vivid anecdotes by icons such as Singapore's founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew; wife of Singapore's first President, Madam Noor Aishah Md Salim; first part-time writer to have won the Cultural Medallion, Mr Isa Kamari; Singapore’s first three-star general, Mr Winston Choo; singer-songwriter, Mr Dick Lee; and Singapore’s first urban planner, Mr Alan Choe, it added.
Professor Tommy Koh, Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Committee, said: “This inspiring book reminds us that the success of Singapore in the last 50 years was due to a combination of good leaders and an exceptional people. Our people’s hard work, discipline, integrity and indomitable spirit have powered our miraculous journey.”
He added that the committee had sought to make the book accessible, easy to read and visually attractive. "This is a book about the people of Singapore and we hope that it will be embraced by Singaporeans as their book."
