<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->POLICE officer Rajantra Mathavar was jailed for a year and two months on Tuesday for corruption. The 47-year-old staff sergeant was convicted of exacting a 'fee' to help a robbery victim get his belongings back.
That fee: $1,000 and two bottles of whisky from Mr Prathiya Raj Doraisamy, 50, who was robbed by two men in August 2006. Mr Prathiya told the police he lost $300 cash and $7,000 worth of jewellery.
A few days later, Rajantra told him that the robbers had been caught. But the bad news was that the jewellery had been pawned and would be melted down.
Mr Prathiya asked the staff sergeant to help him recover the items. That was when Rajantra exacted his fee.
The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau was called in after Mr Prathiya confided in another police officer.
Rajantra was also ordered to pay a penalty of $1,110, comprising the cash and value of liquor he obtained.
He could be fined up to $100,000 fine and jailed for up to five years on each of the two corruption convictions.
