Singaporeans have long faced criticism for various behaviors abroad, but it is important to recognize that not all such incidents can be solely attributed to us.
Increasingly, the actions of new Singaporeans and unchecked migrants, many from other countries with questionable upbringing and values, are adding to the “disgrace rate” of Singaporeans on an international scale. While no nation is perfect and we have our flaws, these individuals amplify the negative perceptions unfairly.
Take, for instance, the case of Venus Ho, labelled as "Singaporean influencer", who dramatized a fake kidnapping at KSL in Johor Bahru. Her story, debunked by CCTV evidence, could have seriously damaged Johor’s tourism reputation. Her social media presence reveals her roots in Malaysia, with credentials and behavior far from what we typically associate with Singaporeans. If she holds Singaporean citizenship, her actions reflect poorly on the nation she now represents, highlighting the need for stricter scrutiny of migrants before granting citizenship.

Another example is the abuse of Ron95 fuel subsidies in Malaysia, meant strictly for locals. Offenders driving Singapore-registered cars have been caught exploiting this system, but many of them could very well be Malaysians with dual connections, looking to enjoy the best of both worlds. This puts law-abiding Singaporeans in a bad light, as the narrative unfairly shifts blame to us.
Malaysians who exploit dual connections to enjoy the best of both worlds, such as in cases like Venus Ho’s fabricated drama, should face double the consequences. Punishment in both countries, if found guilty, would ensure that their actions are met with the seriousness they deserve.
Their behavior undermines the systems and trust of both nations and unfairly drags Singapore’s reputation through the m&d. By holding them accountable on both fronts, it sends a strong message that such irresponsible behavior will not be tolerated, regardless of which side they claim to belong to.
While Singaporeans are no angels, it is undeniable that some new citizens and migrants bring with them poor habits and a lack of accountability, which sully the image of our nation. Singapore must take a stronger stance to ensure that the values and standards we uphold are not undermined by those seeking to exploit the benefits of citizenship without embracing the responsibilities that come with it.
At the same time, Malaysia should hold every individuals accountable and be transparent about their origins instead of allowing such ambiguity to tarnish bilateral goodwill.
It is time for both nations to address these issues with transparency and accountability. Singapore must protect its reputation by ensuring that new citizens align with its values, and Malaysia must expose the offenders' true backgrounds to prevent misplaced blame. Until this happens, Singaporeans will continue to suffer from the disgrace brought upon by individuals who have no regard for the image of the nation they represent.
