I was asked a question this evening by a new migrant I met at a dinner party this evening:

Is APESMA or IEAust more helpful in developing his career here in Oz.

He used to work for a small automation firm as a Automation Engineer in Singapore, now working as a Production Engineer in manufacturing firm but is considering which professional affiliation might help him advance his career or switch line.

Frankly, I myself never thought much about either one so I didn't have much useful input. But it got me curious about the range of services offered

Most of us Engineers have had our experience/qualifications vetted by IEAust as part of our skilled migration visa requirements, but that's about all I had to do with them.

Scrounging around both their websites, it seems that APESMA is a lot more active than IEAust, with a whole host of activities, then again IEAust seems to have more credibility in terms of being able to award Chartered Engineer status to members.

So really, I'm personally interested, what kind of people join APESMA and/or IEAust?

You have asked the right qns.. It depends.. In general, one should hold a professional membership (whichever skill ya in) and the other for Enterprise Bargaining Agreement or they call it EBA.

APESMA is for EBA. It doesnt matter who / what you are, importantly, your agreement should peg at this. APESMA can 'protect' you from big bully.. or unfair dismissal and they can assist you in legal matters.. They are also called the 'Union'... ;) Every 3-4 yrs, your company will enter into an agreement with them.. once signed, your company is bound by the rules.. ie 4% increment per year..

My EBA should end this year.. pending economy and demand for Scientist/Engr/Mgrs.. I expect this time to be 5%, otherwise it should generally be higher than the normal admin/teacher/nurse grade (2.75%)..

Cheers !

Thanks Axe for the advice. Can I say that IEAust is something you want to put on your resume but APESMA is something better left unsaid since it's more of a Union?

You can put both lah..(Some employers are on Unions' side) but IEAust could be useful coz they assess your skill etc.. Once you've join an organisation(planning to stay longer term), it is advisable to join APESMA...

Cheers !
