Simply pathetic, Singapore
LAST Thursday's report of the dialogue between a large group of Serangoon Gardens residents and their MPs once again shows the pathetic attitude of many Singaporeans ('Residents air their dorm fears to their MPs'). We want things done for us but are not willing to bear the costs. We find all kinds of excuses why we should not live with some perceived inconveniences.
People do not want hospices, mortuaries, childcare centres and now foreign workers' dormitories in their neighbourhood. Excuses like 'It is not safe for my children', 'It will make the place more crowded' and the most pathetic of all - 'It will cause property values to fall', just show what an unkind group of people we have become. I feel ashamed to call myself Singaporean at times.
We have become so self-centred and lost the ability to feel for the working class, the underprivileged and, in this case, the thousands of foreign workers who come here to help us construct the buildings, roads and even 'castles' for people, yet we refuse to allow them live more comfortably. We love to admire modern architecture when they are completed but seldom pause to thank these foreign workers who helped to build them. Have a heart, Singaporeans: Let's stop thinking only of ourselves.
