<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I READ Mr Khong Kian Hoon's letter, 'NTUC, be discreet with vouchers', with bemusement last Saturday.
I am a National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) member and I have been asked many times why I joined the union. Most of the time, the typical rejoinder to whatever I say is that there is no need to join, since whatever the union negotiates, every worker gets. Sometimes, people laugh at me for paying $117 a year for membership.
Now the union at Mr Khong's workplace is helping its members, he expresses unhappiness that it has done so insensitively. To argue that the union should have distributed the vouchers to members more discreetly misses the point. The fact is, Mr Khong would have been better off joining the union from day one.
