Anti-vice officers crash ‘party-till-sahur’ joint

PORT KLANG: It was “party over” when anti-vice enforcers raided an entertainment outlet here which is said to be popular with local and foreign revellers. Eighteen people were detained in the 1am raid yesterday at the Kota Pendamar outlet which offered raffle draws for extra beer and cash rewards.

Among those detained were 12 Muslims and four foreigners. Three of them tested positive for drugs. The group conducting the anti-vice raid – code-named Ops Sepadu – comprised officers from the Selangor Islamic Affairs Depart_ment, Klang Municipal Council and the police.

What irked the anti-vice officers most was a poster that encouraged Muslims to stay on until 5am for the sahur (Ramadan pre-dawn meal) and the raffle draws. Klang South OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Mat Yusop said four workers – aged 20 to 40 – were among those picked up. He said the outlet was a pick-up point for guest relations officers looking for customers.

Selangor Islamic Affairs Department senior operations chief Azrul Nizam Amir said his department issued 15 notices for individuals to be present at its office on Aug 30. “The notices concern immoral behaviour and offering alcohol drinks to Muslims,” he said. In another raid earlier, the squad arrested seven people – four transvestites and three women – at the red-light area of Lorong Cungah.

On seeing the vice team in the 10.30pm incident on Friday, many of the transvestites ran into the dark alleys and shop lots. ACP Mohamad said there had been many raids in Lorong Cungah over the decade but police had not been able to curb the vice activities there as customers kept coming back. He said police would continue with the raids.
