Anti-use trolley invented
By Amanda Wong
TRY to push this trolley out of the supermarket and what you will find is, the brakes on the wheels activate and the trolley collapses, dropping your groceries.
This invention was created by a group of Temasick Polytechnic engineering students, who were inspired to tackle the problem of trolley theft after reading reports about the issue in the newspapers.
Final year engineering student, Lee Guo Sheng said, 'When you push the trolley over a hump, there is an alarm that warns shoppers to return the trolley to the supermarket. If they try to lift the trolley, it will give way and your groceries will fall out.'
The team hopes this method will deter shoppers from committing trolley theft.
Every year, supermarket chains lose some $300,000 due to stolen trolleys.
NTUC Fairprice says they are studying the feasibility of such an invention and welcome suggestions to improve the situation.
Fairprice has launched a public education campaign to remind shoppers to return their trolleys.
FairPrice staff and security personnel will also step up vigilance in looking out for customers who abandon the trolleys.
