Anti-use trolley invented
By Amanda Wong

TRY to push this trolley out of the supermarket and what you will find is, the brakes on the wheels activate and the trolley collapses, dropping your groceries.

This invention was created by a group of Temasick Polytechnic engineering students, who were inspired to tackle the problem of trolley theft after reading reports about the issue in the newspapers.

Final year engineering student, Lee Guo Sheng said, 'When you push the trolley over a hump, there is an alarm that warns shoppers to return the trolley to the supermarket. If they try to lift the trolley, it will give way and your groceries will fall out.'

The team hopes this method will deter shoppers from committing trolley theft.

Every year, supermarket chains lose some $300,000 due to stolen trolleys.

NTUC Fairprice says they are studying the feasibility of such an invention and welcome suggestions to improve the situation.

Fairprice has launched a public education campaign to remind shoppers to return their trolleys.

FairPrice staff and security personnel will also step up vigilance in looking out for customers who abandon the trolleys.

Those items in glass bottles and eggs may break if the trolley collape, creating a slippery mess around the exit? Did they take into account this problem?

Thats the idea and the deterrent. Its not supposed to look pretty while it unfolds and collapses.

A cheaper option would be to tag the trolley with a high audible alarm once it crosses the desired boundary. Similat to anti-shoplifting tags found in retail stalls. Unfortunately it will be too simple and commercially available to be considered a project under the innovation band. Welcomed to Education Singapore style.

In other words instead of a straight forward and round wheel, bells and whistles must be added! A dash of wasabe into the hot Indian curry. Voila! Singapore conquers the World!

Wait till the supermart get sued by the customer whose items broke as a result while pushing trolley to carpark to unload then return the trolley to collection point. Just like the monlks assistant recently said that he has every intention to return the money after he is done with it ?

This is what happen when you give peasants an education and train them to be future engineers!

Instead of addressing the root cause of the problem of peasamts stealing the trolleys, they blame the present design trolley instead.

They should design an invention where, when a peasant attempt to push the trolley out of a designated zone...the peasant legs will freeze, give way and the thief will collapse immediately!

Oh as Plan B they have come up with cleaning machines to counter this problem. So productive.

Anything that suppresses Singaporeans of all classes and denominations is good for us.

Looks like those useless jc students can't think of something half as good as this while they spend them studying worthless subjects and taking s papers that has no use or relevance in real life.:wink::wink:

Singapore standard is really dropping. Why are these goons spending their time inventing something when locking carts have been in the market for so many years?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shopping_cart

Electronic systems are being increasingly used by stores because of their successful deterrence. In principle, the system is similar to electric fences that give dogs' necks a yank when they cross an underground boundary. Each shopping cart is fitted with an electronic locking wheel, or 'boot'. A transmitter with a thin wire is placed around the perimeter of the parking lot. The boot locks when the cart leaves the designated area. Store personnel must then deactivate the lock with a hand-held remote to return the cart to stock. Often a line is painted in front of the broadcast range to warn customers that their cart will stop when rolled past the line.

Here is a step by step guide to built a shopping cart locker system:

http://www.instructables.com/id/EMP-shopping-cart-locker/

Ever noticed a painted yellow line in the parking lot around many supermarkets and retail stores? The magic yellow line emits a signal that causes carts to stop dead in their tracks, preventing carts from leaving the parking lot.
Now you can build your own portable yellow line-- with up to a 20 foot range. Need I say more? Hint: it works inside the store.

So clever.

BUT people push trolleys to car park to put the items into the boot. What a way to screw yourselves Temasick Poly students.

Instead of alarm, the system should spew outright degrading vulgarities of the highest degree which make those on Sammy forum nothing but child talk. And in 4 languages too. This should be enough to discourage and shame them.

Actually they are all going around the bush. AGAIN. Just tell the shoppers to surrender their IC or Passport for every trolley taken, and RETURN them to get their identities back. SIMPLE.

It's like how those triad movies depict people borrowing money from loansharks using their ID. Where if you do not perform your end of the bargain, they would know what to do to you.

See? I'm not even a Poly or an ITE student and yet I'm so smart.

Nah they will. Everybody carries their identity cards around anyway, for fear of being called an illegal immigrant. If NTUC takes the lead in making it mandatory then all other private supermarkets will follow and so will everybody else.

Also, when you observe their track performance for the last 40 over years so far you'd realize that Singaporeans have a naturally albeit perversely high threshold for pain and suffering. Isn't this obvious?

Even when some policies are passed across the board that they seem unable to accept, they still chose to not protest and speak up, DESPITE the establishment often encouraging more activism from them, take a keen stake in national issues.

Many Singaporeans will be grateful to this bunch of bright, promising, young, responsible and nationalistic POLY students for coming up with such an incredibly marvelous contraption that brought tears even to God and his angels when they were browsing this forum with us.

they should invent a GPRS tracking system at the trolley that able them to track down those ppl who steals . or even better , ask customers to pay a deposit the same price for buying the trolley ( some things do not need to invent , just use your brain ) . anyway , is the trolley make of gold ? why ppl want to steal it ?
