The South African inventor Sonnet Ehlers has just finished designing a female condom-like anti-rape device. After months of careful trials, the product is almost ready to be commercially launched.

The device, called Rapex, has triggered controversy worldwide, but Ehlers is developing the final pre-production phase after seven years of research.

The controversy was provoked by the fact that the device, which presents fish-like teeth bound to the head and shaft of the penis, is a medieval barbaric one, based on a hatred of men or that it is an easy-to-use invention that could protect millions of South African women from rape.

The latest numbers show that in South Africa, 54 926 rape cases are recorded annually, this being one of the worst sexual assault records in the world. "This product can come to the market anytime now. The stage to wait and check if there are any patent infringements will be up on April 10," said Ehlers.

After announcing her invention one-and-half years ago, Ehlers got international fame and provoked a worldwide debate about her anti-rape device. She has participated on talk radio shows in England and Australia and was interviewed by South American journalists. "I am not a male hater... but why must the woman always be the one degraded by rape?" said Ehlers.

The device was not welcomed even by Even Rape Crisis Cape Town, as they fear it could expose women to more violence. But Ehlers believes that this device, which is inserted in the vagina, could offer women vital seconds to escape the rapist while he is dealing with his pain. "The surprise factor will give women a chance to escape," says Ehlers.

The 25 teeth would inflict the rapist a great deal of pain as they attach themselves to the shaft of the penis and only a doctor can remove the fish-like teeth. "I want this guy to be identified. I want a scientific way not to deny that penetration took place," said Ehlers.

Anti-Rape Condom Campaign Wants Us To Live In Fear
August 4, 2008 - 4:30 pm By Kari- Florida State
When I saw this my only thoughts were What. The. F**k?! Why, why was this permitted to be patented?

For those unfamiliar with the Rapex, it is an “anti-rape condom”. Basically, it’s a condom worn inside of you with barbs that, should any man put his hoo ha where it is not welcome, it will be stuck with barbs removable only by a doctor.

Naturally, this raises a few questions, many of which can be answered by the website’s extremely helpful FAQ section.

The first question, of course: “When should I wear the Rapex?”

According to the website I should wear it when I: “travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don’t know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure.” So I guess I should just be practicing constant vigilance? At no point in my day should I forget that I– as the owner of a vagina–am always susceptible to rape, and this device will always allow me to have it in the back of my mind!

Secondly, how does this change my relationship with, ya know, the other half of the human race? Well, I know I don’t have to worry about my boyfriend being hooked, “unless you are in a violent relationship and you do get raped by your husband or partner. The choice is then yours whether to wear it or not. ” Whew! Thank you Rapex, for giving me that option!

So I guess I’m pretty much covered Rapex, thanks to your innovative thinking, and also thanks to answers based on questions like these: “What happens if my child finds it in the waste paper basket and sticks his finger into it?”, “Can this be worn during masturbation?”, and “What if I am asleep and someone enters my house and tries to rape me?”

I mean, they pretty much all have the same gist: wear our product 24-7 not out of fear but out of responsibility and a safeguard against the inherent viciousness of all men.

The only questions that really occurred to me that weren’t addressed on your site I’ll just post here and possibly you could get back to me on them?

Just how many light years does this set us back as far as the whole feminist movement thingey majig? I mean, I totally understand why we should revert to the dark ages and all women should live in constant fear of all men, and we’re all potential rape victims…but exactly, how many years (approx) are we exactly going back?

Another thing I came to ponder, was what inspired this brilliant stroke of genius? I know you don’t hate men (”just rape!”–a novel opinion, let me just say), but it seems sort of insulting to blanket-assume pretty much every Tom, Dick and Harry we pass by on the street is probably going to drag us into an alleyway and have their way with us (obviously to be prevented by your device, though.) I guess it’s no more insulting though, than helping us girls adapt to rape.

Yesterday, as I read One D At a Time, I couldn’t help but agree with the blogger’s thoughts on feminist vs feminist hateration. And her discussion of Camille Paglia’s theories on Date Rape as a new method of fear mongering couldn’t apply to anything more than they do to this. Look, I understand that rape is a real threat to all of us. But by insisting that we must assume responsibility “Simply because your body is sacred and it is your legal and moral right to be safe. Nobody can make you safe except you. You do not have to secure your home, equally you do not have to secure your body, however it is better if you do so,” you reiterate society’s subconscious implications that, in the end, it’s our fault we get raped.

Thoughts on these ideas, ladies? On Rapex itself?

This inventor is quite smart, but a smarter rapist will just penetrate thru the BACKDOOR!

insert a rubber dick inside first to extract it out. and then execute the real thing.

Very stupid if you asked me!

As if rapists don't know how to find this thing and remove it?:p

Damn silly so called invention!:D

In case of Gang Rape, it can at most give a careless 1st entry rapist a nasty surprise. That's all. The rest of them are still going to have their fun. And the victim will be punished sexually for wearing that.
:(

is it comfortable for the women?
do they have problem to pee with this on?

Do you think I need to use it?

I dont understand why the device would be stuck to thepenis. WHen the penis losses its erection the device will just fall out. Correct me if i'm wrong.

She must be raped before. How about a second one in their asses to prevent their sodomy?

Maybe I'm just dumb but could someone tell me what is stopping the rapist from just removing the thing by hand first before penetratingt?

You guys obviously never had the experience of a sex partner evincing reluctance or outright refusal to sexual intercourse. It's big enough a problem getting between her legs let alone search for a condom like device!

it definitely can stop the raping....

but many women will ended up kena killed....in retaliation...

stupid invention...

So add in a neuron incapacitating chemical at the tips of the barbs just like the Vietcong punji sticks tipped with human excrement.

I hope to see this distributed free and widely in India.

wouldn't the women become drowsy first after inserting this?

Tee Kee, scrutinise the design, it's barbs are ringed and aligned inwards and it's supposed to be worn on a temporary basis although for Chua Lee Hoong and Ho Jinx it should be permanently implanted!

Ur statement doesn't make sense. The thing is to prevent women from getting raped. U actually think someone would want to rape those 2???

Count yourself lucky that you are asking me and not the oddball acid tongue sage. He will chide you for ill comprehension skills.

In broad strokes, it is a condom to be inserted like a tampon with a little string attached. Ask your wife for the details. If a rapist who is strewed enough to check for such a contraption and make the victim remove it, then too bad. It's not suppose to be a fail-safe off the shelf setup, it's more of a deterrence. A bank with an armed security guard can still get robbed. If these devices are widely available, known and used. It still will not deter the debased South Asian baboons from raping.

U mentioned Chua Lee Hong and Ho Ching should permanently have this on. eh, when I meant it doesnt make sense, I meant I seriously doubt anyone would want to rape those 2
