二審時，李宏基揚言出獄將復仇，法官認為毫無悔意，加重判處無期徒刑與死刑，經最高院發回更審，全案上訴最高院死刑定讞，於昨日終於伏法。
對此，法學教授李茂生在臉書發文表示，「我深深覺得裡面有陰謀。不是法務部的陰謀，而是論者的陰謀。」他指出，有人認為法務部應該是有與麥當勞連線，在法務部決定執行死刑的時候，由麥當勞出面來個戴小姐（戴資穎）大麥克造成搶購風潮事件，藉此掩飾掉死刑的執行。
李茂生接著說，「如果認為這兩件事情是同一陰謀所促成的，那麼執行死刑藉此換選票一事就不能成立了。所以法務部現在應該是恨死麥當勞了。好死不死，在這個節骨眼，給大爺來個大麥克！」

蔡英文政府執政以來，在昨（31）日首次執行死刑。41歲的李宏基因殺害妻女，在2016依殺人罪判死定讞，並在昨日遭槍決。截至目前，仍有42名死囚待伏法，其中不乏殺人手段與李宏基相似、關押更久的囚犯，為何挑上李宏基呢？

法務部昨日發布「千字文」解釋，考量李宏基因無再審、非常上訴、聲請釋憲、及精神狀態後，才會選中他。根據《蘋果日報》報導，在法務部長蔡清祥7月上任後，傳出將簽出蔡政府首次槍決同意書，因此多名死囚緊急提出在審及非常上訴，但李宏基未提出任何申請。廢死聯盟行長吳佳臻也說，李宏基一心求死，不願接受廢死聯盟協助，因法律過程已完備，才會成為蔡政府槍決第一人。
另外，李宏基在2014年犯案、2016年定罪至今僅4年多，根據《聯合報》報導，「死刑執行審議小組」認為很久以前的案子可能因罪證不完備、證據難考證有冤錯可能，讓李宏基因「夠新」獲選。
李宏基過去因屢次對妻子施暴，在申請保護令後企圖抱走當時6歲及4歲的女兒輕生，遭判處11年徒刑。他出獄後懷恨在心，趁妻子載女兒上學時強行擄女遭擋，竟在眾目睽睽之下拿出預藏的刀子殺害妻子，期間小女兒趁亂逃進幼兒園，李宏基就帶著大女兒在車上燒炭自殺，女兒送醫不治，李宏基則僥倖存活。當時一審法院判處他無期徒刑，但他卻嗆聲「不死不休」，揚言再對妻子親友不利，二審認為他惡性重大判處死刑定讞。

國民黨發言人洪孟楷31日晚間也質疑，蔡英文政府上任兩年多首次執行死刑，「如果執法目的僅是為了年底選舉做交代、而對剩下的定讞死囚未給予應當刑責，台灣社會多數民眾仍會無法接受。」
連前總統陳水扁1日也在臉書嘲諷，「8月31日是蔡英文總統62歲壽誕，恭祝總統生日快樂！福如台海！壽比玉山！萬歲萬萬歲！」他還酸，法務部說死刑執行前沒跟蔡英文報告過，在還沒有廢除死刑前，要不要暫緩執行死刑，總統沒有參與討論和做政治決定，「任誰也不會相信！」
法務部次長陳明堂31日曾表示，李宏基以殘酷手段殺害前妻及親生子女，手段兇殘、泯滅人性，除使被害人無辜喪命，並造成被害人家屬無可彌補之哀痛及天倫夢碎之悲劇外，侵害兒童權利公約所重視之兒童固有生命權也符合《兩公約》「情節最重大之罪」且無教化可能性，為實現社會正義而執刑。
面對外界的質疑，蔡英文今天面對記者提問時，沒有做任何具體的回應。
近年來，最高法院死刑判決定讞案件已不多見，這幾年僅有鄭捷及李宏基遭判死刑定讞，目前全台仍還有42名死囚。

台灣麥當勞今天突然宣布上午10時30分起大部分餐廳暫停營業，對於昨天的「麥當勞之亂」，網友很有感，指「恭喜麥當勞撐過了，希望沒被台灣人吃垮」、「牛跟雞都要變保育類動物了」、「慶祝拿金牌，今天員工放假一天」，但也有網友說，「謝謝麥當勞支持台灣運動員」。

一名麥當勞員工在凌晨3點時於臉書社團「爆怨公社」發文指出「終於下班了」，她透露因為麥當勞買一送一的活動太熱烈，晚上不僅10點半還有一堆排隊人潮，「平時2個半小時就可以把廚房洗乾淨，今天用了4個小時，戴著手套泡著熱水，手都破皮了」這讓她痛苦地說「錢真難賺啊！」

對於員工的辛勞，麥當勞也發聲明表示「由於兌換情形熱烈遠超過預期，對於造成部分餐廳同仁工作量增加，麥當勞至為關心並深感歉意；為體恤餐廳同仁的辛勞並表達感謝之意，針對支援活動之計時人員，決定給付雙倍時薪，月薪人員則可擇日補休1天。」
稍早麥當勞更宣布，為了體恤員工辛勞，今(9月1日)上午10:30後大部份餐廳暫停營業；惟百貨、賣場、學校、交通轉運站相關類型的餐廳，將視情形營業。
