Cancellation of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue: Asia Security Summit

In light of the deteriorating global COVID-19 situation, the IISS must announce the cancellation of this year's Shangri-La Dialogue. The summit was due to take place in Singapore on 4–5 June 2021.
It is with regret and sadness that the IISS must announce the cancellation of the 2021 Shangri-La Dialogue, which had been scheduled to take place 4–5 June 2021.
A wide range of defence ministers, senior officials, corporate leaders and influential strategists from Asia, North America, the Middle East and Europe have confirmed their attendance. The IISS has worked hard with the Government of Singapore, and in particular acted in close consultation with Singapore’s Ministry of Defence, to ensure a successful Dialogue this year, despite the challenges of the pandemic.
Even during COVID-19, the IISS believes in the role of face-to-face diplomacy to solve global problems. We continue to hold successful face-to-face events, including the IISS Manama Dialogue in Bahrain, which was convened in 2020, and will take place again on 19–21 November 2021.
Unfortunately the global COVID-19 situation has recently deteriorated, in part because of the rise of infectious new COVID variants. In Singapore there has been a rise in local cases, recently introduced new restrictions, and the prospect of further tightening cannot be ruled out – all of which creates uncertainty. Taken together these various factors mean that holding an in-person Shangri-La Dialogue this year has become unviable.
The IISS wishes to thank all the delegates from around the world who had committed to participate in the Shangri-La Dialogue this year, as well as the Government of Singapore for its steadfast support over recent weeks.
The IISS remains committed to the Shangri-La Dialogue, which it had convened every year since 2002, until the pandemic halted our efforts. The Institute will now be in touch with all of our partners to discuss how we can take this important process forward.
Meanwhile our IISS–Asia office in Singapore will press on with an exciting programme of research and events, while also beginning to plan our next IISS Fullerton Forum in January 2022, and the return of the full in-person IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in the middle of next year.
We thank everyone concerned for their support for the IISS and the Shangri-La Dialogue.

Too late. The other day I was watching a video segment on CNA of some kids doing something in Singapore. In the background, there was a 對聯 reading “中新一家”. WTF? This was exactly why LKY forced all the nation building propaganda down our throats in the 1980s and 1990s. You can’t have a nation if people in it answer to their ethnic motherlands. LHL and the modern PAP have fucked up badly.

Nothing to do with ethnicity... the Confucius Institute is a nest for CCP espionage, masquerading as a place to learn Chinese language and culture. It needs to be shut down yesterday.

The CI is also used to disseminate CCP propaganda and generate feelings of loyalty to the culture/race/ethnicity before nation.

But I’d never argue that it should be shutdown for the reasons you cited too.

Hmm will the recent racist and xenophobic comments hurt Singapore in the long term? Reduce meetings and tourism? I think should be ok. People have short memories. Hope Singapore gets back its zero covid cases status soon!
