A commotion took place in Chinatown on Thursday afternoon (8 Mar) when a woman screamed that a man had robbed her.
The incident took place at about 12.50pm at a bus stop along Eu Tong Sen Street outside Pearl's Centre.
A plump local man with long hair was said to have snatched the handbag of a foreign woman standing next to him.
According to an eyewitness, Mdm Wu (clerk, 56), the woman had screamed for help and accused the man of robbing her when he snatched her handbag.
The man had tried to get away by hailing a taxi but as he tried to board it, the woman not only screamed louder, she also pounced on him and dragged him out of the taxi by his hair.
Meanwhile, according to another eyewitness, the taxi driver did not dare to drive off.
The cabbie had thought that a robbery was taking place as the woman was kicking up such a racket and bystanders were shouting.
However, many of the bystanders were simply stunned by the unusual scene and none stepped forward to help.
A passing patrol car stopped to investigate the commotion and discovered that the two were in fact a couple fighting in the street.
Eventually, more than ten police officers arrived and took statements from the couple.
