NSF gets fine, driving ban for platoon mate's death
SINGAPORE: A full-time National Serviceman who caused the death of another NSF in January was fined S$3,000 and banned from driving for three years.
Theophilus Richardson Lai Tian En, 21, pleaded guilty to the offence. He had failed to ensure that the lever of the military vehicle was in a forward position before driving off at Jurong Camp on Jan 28.
Lance Corporal Eugin Wee Yong Choon, 19, had been about to unload stores from the back of the vehicle. He was pinned against a pillar when the vehicle jerked backwards, causing him to suffer multiple injuries and his death.
District Judge Low Wee Ping said his tragic death was the result of a freak accident.
Lai could have been jailed up to two years. - TODAY
