A PUB waitress, who used someone else's identity card to 'visit' her detained boyfriend in Queenstown Remand Prison, is now also behind bars.
Lydia Whyte, 25, was sentenced on Wednesday to six months jail for using this ruse seven times.
She had used 26-year-old Azinah Ahmad Said's identity card to gain access to the Tele-visit facilty that is operated by Singapore Prisons Service at the Certis Cisco Centre in Paya Lebar.
This service allows relatives and close friends to use the tele-conferencing service to see and talk to those in remand or in prison. It makes it convenient for relatives and friends, especially the sickly and elderly, to see detainees without having to travel to the prisons.
From July 28, Whyte went undetected seven times pretending to be Ms Azinah, a customer service officer.
Her visits were allowed after a check showed that she did not have a criminal record.
However, on her eighth visit on Aug 13, her luck ran out.
A prison officer realised that Whyte did not resemble the person in the identity card.
Police were called in and Whyte admitted to using the identity card belonging to Ms Azinah.
Whyte also had previous convictions for drug consumption and theft.
Court documents do not indicate that the two women knew each other and how Whyte got hold of Ms Azinah's identity card.
Asking for a light sentence, Whyte said that she was a single mother with a five-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son.
District Judge James Leong told her she had committed a serious offence, which carries a prescribed sentence of up to $10,000 fine or a jail term of up to 10 years or both. He then jailed her for six months on the three charges proceeded with by the prosecution.
