SINGAPORE - A businessman pleaded guilty yesterday in a district court to molesting a hotel employee at a hotel in Little India on Feb 6.
Udaya Kumar Purushottaman Chembottu (picture), a 50-year-old Indian national, was said to have been a guest of the hotel.
The hotel cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim.
Chembottu had approached the 19-year-old hotel trainee and touched her shoulder, rubbed her neck, then stroked and slapped her buttock.
For outraging her modesty, he was jailed for a week and fined $3,000. Another charge of molestation was taken into consideration as Chembottu had also molested another hotel employee on the same day.
This other victim, aged 24, had witnessed Chembottu's earlier actions and tried to avoid him as he was leaving the hotel lounge after dinner. But Chembottu - who is married with a daughter - approached her and proceeded to hug and kiss her.
Chembottu was arrested after both victims reported the matter to the police. He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or caned or fined on each charge.
