SINGAPORE: Three illegal immigrants and their Singaporean contact were nabbed while attempting to enter Singapore illegally last Saturday.
Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers were on an ambush along Senoko Way, near Woodlands, when they saw the three offenders emerge from a drain.
The offenders, who are all Chinese nationals, then ran towards a waiting Singapore-registered car.
When the ICA officers gave chase, the driver and the immigration offenders climbed out of the car and fled in different directions. But all the suspects were soon caught after a short pursuit by the officers.
The driver, a 52-year-old Singaporean man, claimed he was approached by another man and offered S$300 to pick up the trio and fetch them to designated spots.
If convicted for abetting immigration offenders, the man faces a maximum jail term of five years and a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
The three immigration offenders, who had been previously convicted for offences such as illegal entry and overstaying, face a jail term of up to six months and a minimum of three strokes of the cane. - 938LIVE/vm
