<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to the report, "LTA aims to ease traffic flow along 10 road corridors", on Thursday.
I have been a resident of Geylang for more than 30 years and it has always been a challenge crossing the stretch of road along Sims Avenue every day. The underlying problem with Sims Avenue and Geylang Road can be attributed to three main factors: jaywalking, the increased number of cyclists and illegal parking.
It is a common sight to see cars parked on the double zigzag lines on the roads. The condition is worse during the weekends and durian season. I have alerted the Traffic Police to the problem many times.
There has also been an increasing number of foreign workers living along both stretches of roads and they simply jaywalk and cycle as they like, more often then not in the opposite direction. As a result, cars generally need to slow down and "give way" to them. Ultimately, it creates a bottleneck.
The solution? Extend the full-day bus lane along Sims Avenue as currently it stops right before the stretch of durian stalls. This will eliminate all illegal parking.
As for the jaywalkers and cyclists, have more Traffic Police officers on patrol. Their presence may be a good deterrent. Annie Koh (Ms)
