NUS student dies
American on exchange programme believed to have been drinking

AN AMERICAN exchange programme student at the National University of Singapore (NUS) died after suffering breathing difficulties in his hostel room early yesterday morning.

Mr Scott Monat, 21, had been hanging out with a friend - it is believed the pair had been consuming alcohol - in his Prince George's Park Residences room when he apparently had trouble breathing at around 5am yesterday.

His friend then frantically screamed for help, and his calls roused fellow students at the hostel.

Some rushed to the room to try and resuscitate him, while others called for help.

Paramedics who arrived shortly after took over the rescue effort, but Mr Monat remained unconscious. He was then taken to the National University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 6.45am.

Contacted last night, an NUS spokesman said the student had experienced 'breathing difficulties while resting in his room' at the hostel, which is popular with foreign students.

NUS provost Tan Eng Chye said members of the university were 'deeply saddened by what happened' and were in touch with the dead youth's family.

Several students who had rushed to Mr Monat's aid said the smell of alcohol hung heavily in the room. A bottle of pills - believed to be his medication - was also taken away by police.

Mr Monat, who arrived in Singapore barely two months ago, was a second-year student at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, in the United States.

When contacted last night, the American university declined to comment, saying it had barely had time to digest the news of the tragedy. The police have classified the incident as a case of unnatural death and are investigating.

Nat Geo had this documentary on how certain people have a genetic heart defect that can cause them to die suddenly in their sleep. For some strange reason, most of the victims are young men.

This is one of the theories put forward to explain why SG had a spate of Thai constuction workers dying mysteriously in the 90s. Maybe the angmo have this defective gene as well.
