Angela Nikolau, who described herself as an “extreme roofer girl”, tweeted on Jan 4 that she spent several weeks conducting surveillance of the building from a nearby rented apartment.
She then claimed to have accessed the building by dressing up in a builder’s uniform with glasses and hijab, and proceeded to run up the first 32 floors.
At some point, Nikolau claimed that she was “detected” and hid in a small concrete box for more than 20 hours. She later took the opportunity to make her way to the top of the building when the construction workers were on break.
Nikolau said she will be releasing an NFT of her climb, adding that she wants someone else to “own this achievement”.
Nikolau’s tweet has received backlash from Malaysian netizens on the platform who slammed her for trespassing, while some also condemned her actions as “disrespectful”.
Reports about a duo claiming to have scaled Merdeka 118 first emerged last week after photos and videos from the incident went viral on social media.
In a statement on Dec 29, PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd said legal action will be taken against anyone found trepassing into Merdeka 118 as the building is still a live construction site.
“As it is private property, any trespassers will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” said a spokesman in the statement.
Police said they are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate the authenticity of the video.
