On April 10, an American media published an article titled "Exposing: China's Air-launched Ballistic Missiles that Can Bring Nuclear Warheads." The article quoted the "U.S. government sources," saying that China has conducted a total of five flight tests on an "already unknown" air-blast ballistic missile (ALBM) that may be based on Dongfeng 21. Although there is no domestic news source at present, but the reference to the “precise exposure” of the Dongfeng-21D by the US media more than a decade ago, this news may not be groundless. In this issue of "Sheath" we come to talk about those things behind the air-launched ballistic missiles. (See the full content search WeChat public number: sinamilnews)

The air-launched ballistic missiles exposed by the U.S. media were numbered CH-AS-X-13 according to the "US intelligence agency" custom. It is carried by a "new H-6k" bomber that can be refueled in the air. US intelligence agencies believe that the bomber's serial number is H-6X1 or H-6N, which was developed specifically for launching air-based ballistic missiles. The missile was tested for the first time in December 2016 and the last test was conducted in the last week of January 2018. The US Secretary of Defense Intelligence also mentioned this type of missile in the recent "Global Threat Assessment".

In fact, air-launched ballistic missiles are not a new concept in themselves. In 1957, the Soviet Union developed its first generation of intercontinental ballistic missile R-7. Its 6,000-kilometer test range has been able to cover the whole of Europe and the United States of Alaska from its Plesetsk launch site. However, intelligence shows that the actual range of the missile can reach 8,000 kilometers, which means that its range can cover most of the United States, including New York, Washington, including the territory. However, when the R-7 missile was formally commissioned in 1959, the United States’ intercontinental missile project still did not show much improvement. The Soviet nuclear deterrence could only be accomplished through bomber units.

Under this premise, at that time, the United States opened the GAM-87 sky-light project in order to enable bombers to conduct nuclear strikes outside the Soviet Union's air defense zone. The SkyScatter missile is a two-stage solid missile equipped with a 1000-kiloton W59 hydrogen bomb warhead with a range of 1,150 miles (1850 kilometers) and a high altitude of more than 300 miles (482 kilometers). In 1960, the United Kingdom joined the project and announced that it would purchase 144 Tian-Shao missiles and launch them from the Vulcan Bomber. However, the British are only involved in the part of the Vulcan Bomber that can carry Sky-Sky.
