The President of the Republic of Singapore, acting in his discretion, and in concurrence with the advice of the Prime Minister, will appoint Sir Henry Bernard Eder as an International Judge to the Singapore International Commercial Court, under Article 95(4) of the Constitution. Sir Bernard will be sworn in on 7 May 2015 at a ceremony to be held at the Istana.

2 Sir Bernard, age 62, is formerly a Judge of the High Court of England and Wales and was assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division and the Commercial Court from 2011 to 1 April 2015. Prior to his appointment to the UK Bench, he was a Barrister in Essex Court Chambers of London from 1975 to 2010 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1991. He is widely recognised as an expert in the areas of commercial disputes, civil claims and international arbitration involving all aspects of commercial law including banking, shipping, sale of goods, commodities, oil/gas and insurance. He is currently the Senior Editor of Scrutton on Charterparties and Bills of Lading.

3 With this appointment, the Singapore International Commercial Court will have a total of 12 International Judges.

There are not enough talented sinkies around. Also, the job is given to the candidate with the most suitable merit, not nationality. We are not Malaysia with its bumiputra policy.

I am one of the few sinkies who is! But there aren't enough talented sinkies. So we need to supplement the sinkie workforce with talented foreigners. That's been one of our key economic strategies for the past 15 years.

That has never stopped the PAP. Just look at the track record of the judges here especially in the political cases:wink:

I believe the ang mo will only hear commercial cases. MIW wont take the risk with political cases. Ang mos can be too independent.

It does not matter whether he hears only commercial cases or not. The SICC is part of the singapore judicial system along with the High Court and Supreme Court. As such, no foreign citizens should be part of it, unless they are saying an FT judge can also be appointed to the Lower and Upper courts.
