‘This is a tidal wave’: Democrats blow Republicans out of the water in the key bellwether state of Election Day 2017

Democrats scored sweeping victories on the east coast on Tuesday, winning gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia and picking up dozens of seats in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Pollsters and pundits voiced collective shock at the strength of Democratic turnout, particularly in Virginia, which is widely viewed as a bellwether of opposition to President Donald Trump.

Democrats in Virginia elected gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam in the first competitive statewide election since Trump took office, while simultaneously winning the lieutenant governor’s contest, reelecting their attorney general, and flipping dozens of seats in the state legislature.

Stunner! Dems win 1st-ever Delaware county offices, take 2 seats on County Council, 3 row offices

In a major upset, Democrats swept races for two Delaware County Council seats on Tuesday and captured all three row offices. It was the first time in history that the party won competitive countywide races.

“It’s been a long time coming, let me tell you,” Delaware County Democratic Chairman David Landau said. “This is going to be a historic night.”

Democratic council candidates Kevin Madden and Brian Zidek had 61,695 and 60,657 votes respectively compared to the tallies of Republicans Dave White, an incumbent, who had 58,712 votes and John Perfetti with 58,454. Libertarian Ed Clifford received 2,040 votes.

The last time a Democrat served on county council was in 1980. No Democrat has served on the body since the Home Rule Charter eliminated the requirement for minority party representation.

It was a night for the Democrats in traditionally Republican trenches as Upper Darby also swung Democratic. Even Mario Civera, the current county council chairman, lost his bid to return to township council.

Current District Attorney Jack Whelan was the only Republican to win a countywide race on Tuesday, taking a seat on Common Pleas Court.

May i ask why is there an election again? I thought the election was over and Trump is the President.
