SINGAPORE: The Singapore government is looking to change the law to enhance police officers' powers in apprehending people who show signs of a mental disorder and pose a safety risk to themselves or others.
This is because the law currently does not set out the powers that the police have in nabbing such people, said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a press release on Thursday (Mar 7).
The amendments come under the Law Enforcement and Other Matters Bill, which was introduced by MHA and will be debated in parliament at a later sitting.
If the Bill is passed, the police will be able to search, restrain and use necessary force when apprehending a “mentally disordered” person.
