Town councils not raising fees
But some say rising costs make it hard to keep conservancy fees at current rates
By Carolyn Quek

RESIDENTS outside of Aljunied and Jurong can breathe easy for now, as most town councils say they will not be raising their conservancy fees just yet.

Aljunied and Jurong town councils announced two weeks ago that they will be increasing their service and conservancy (S&C) fees from next month, due to higher operating and maintenance costs.

However, 13 of the 14 remaining town councils say they will not be raising their fees just yet. The last town council - Hougang - did not respond to queries.

But some did say rising costs have made it increasingly difficult for them to maintain the status quo.

Aljunied and Jurong town councils had made known to their residents that they will raise monthly conservancy charges by between 50 cents and $4.50 for Singapore home owners, depending on the type of flat.

The increase for permanent residents and foreigners will be between $2.80 and $7.50.

Stressing that the report is not meant to rank town councils but rather, should act as a talking point between residents and the management, Ms Fu said: "If residents are happy with a level 3 for cleanliness, no further action is needed. Should they wish for a better grade or a cleaner estate by having more frequent washings, residents may have to consider the trade-off of paying more fees."

I reckon paying more does not necessary equate better results?

For the month of April. May, June 2010. Resident from Aljunied and Jurong GRC have been paying higher S&C charges. 3 months not enough to yield better results?

So after 3 month of paying more. We should expect the level of cleanliness of Aljunied and Jurong town council to move from Level 2 to Level 1 and maintainance to move Level 3 to 2?

If paying more equates to better results, Orchard Road will be paved with gold since our politicians are the highest paid in the world.

She commit to paying more will yield better results.

Do you spend any time in these 2 estates of Aljunied and Jurong? Some of the residents there are really filthy pigs(and it only takes 2 or 3 of these really filthy people per block to ruin a whole estate!). Assigning 100% of Town Council's employees will not be enough to fix the problem. But maybe putting videocameras everywhere may reduce the problem.

Some days, it appears as if the filthy Singaporeans are having a competition with the filthy FT's to see who is filthier!

I stay in Jurong West, Hong Kah GRC, the mother of all ethnic enclaves.
