SINGAPORE: Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for Bukit Panjang Single-Member Constituency (SMC) Alec Tok has acknowledged that his opponent and incumbent in the ward, Dr Teo Ho Pin, had done a good job since the last election.
He said at his rally on Tuesday night that he would, as such, not speak against him but instead, against his People's Action Party (PAP).
During walkabouts and discussions with voters, Mr Tok said residents had commended Dr Teo, who has been the constituency's Member of Parliament (MP) since 2001.
"I can see for myself he's done a good job," he said in Mandarin at the rally. He would, therefore, focus his speech against Dr Teo's "boss" - the PAP, he said.
Speaking on a wide range of topics, Mr Tok, a theatre director, said that, compared to 10 years ago, Singapore is now a worse place to live in under the PAP because more foreign workers have been allowed in.
"Our children even have to compete with foreign students in schools," he said.
Urging the residents to vote for him, he said the SDP is an inclusive party that takes in all views from all walks of life to discuss issues and to plot the future for Singaporeans.
Another SDP speaker, Ms Teo Soh Lung, who is standing in the Yuhua SMC against Senior Minister of State (Education) Grace Fu, claimed credit for the Opposition on several developments in the past week, including a stay in the Goods and Services Tax for the next five years, as well as a recommendation for higher pay increase by the National Wages Council.
She also claimed a political point over her opponent on the issue of class size in schools.
Last Friday, Ms Teo had criticised the education system, saying the current class size of 40 students was too big.
Ms Fu later clarified that the class size has been reduced to 20 or even lower for certain learning support programmes.
"We have succeeded in making the PAP admit that the class size today is 40 and that they will take action to reduce class size in future," Ms Teo said. "We have succeeded even before we entered Parliament."
