AirAsia boss Fernandez eyes Singapore Airlines
5 Dec 2008,

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian budget airline AirAsia's boss Tony Fernandez has said his long-term goal is to one day "take over"
Singapore Airlines (SIA), the national airline of the neighbouring city state.

The maverick entrepreneur revealed his company's ambitions at the end of a slide presentation at an event where he was conferred an award by Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak Thursday.

To the amazement of those present, he showed two pictures - one of aircraft livery and the other of AirAsia's new uniform for its stewardesses. He told his audience that he would name his new company Singapore AirAsia, The Sun newspaper reported Friday.

Fernandez kept the audience in stitches throughout his one-hour presentation, ending it with the remark: "And this is the uniform the stewardesses on board Singapore AirAsia will wear." He pointed to a picture of a smiling woman wearing a combination of the famous SIA baju kebaya and striking red AirAsia skirt.

While many in the audience laughed it off, aviation industry observers said it was a signal from Fernandez following news reports of Malaysia Airlines being in talks for a strategic alliance with British Airways and Qantas.

A Malaysian news portal said that owing to global economic pressures, the airline industry was going through a consolidation period, with talks of mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies dominating the business pages.

At Thursday's event, Razak said he was proud of Fernandez's achievements, not only for his company but for the country as well.

AirAsia is rated as having done remarkably well in Southeast Asia and has begun flights to various destinations in India.

To take over SGP airlines, in addition to buying more longer range planes, you have to duplicate Changi Airport, not only with physical insfrastructure, but get rid of the Matland working mentality.

Speed up the customs and immigration, as long as he/she is not carrying a bomb, let them through fast!!

Lower airport taxes! Make long range travel cheaper. Outreach to European and US markets, in addition to the Chinese market. Identify profitable flights source/destinations...planes that will be fully packed. Reduce the space between seats, giving people more leg rooms. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! It's too cramp in Economy seats!!

Once you make Matland as SEA transit hub, SIA will lose business and share prices will drop, then it's time to buyout.

MAS is catching up in terms of service nowadays..in addition to competitive pricing...instead of flying AIR-ASIA, do you know many malaysians are coming to Changi to take short flights to other SEA destinations?

Tony, why dont u save MAS instead before u take
a big leap ?

I hope he succeeded in doing that. Since PAP loves FT, now is the chance.

I did remember malaysia sending an astronaut(paying space traveller) in tospace, maybe fernandez guy should buy a rocket. But the easiest way is to ask SIA to slow down.

That Fernandez guy has got fire in the belly. I'd bet on him instead of SIAs "scholars"

While SIA is figuring out how to squezze more $$$ by packing more passengers into those A380, Airasia will be offering flights KL to London for $600.

KLs airport has has lower costs than Changi. They've improved the connections to KL. They haven't ignored their low cost terminal while in Spore the budget terminal is under developed.

I bet Malaysia is attracting more tourists with its cheaper hotels, shopping, Malaysian experience, etc. Don't forget about Bangkok, Spore is going to loose ground to both Malaysia & Banggkok.

Heard that the Indonesian gov't is looking at increasing the "fiscal" tax, the amount Indonesians pay to travel out of the country. If true Spore is going to feel the impact.
