Miami, FL (AHN) - AIDS has become China's deadliest infectious disease with nearly 7,000 people dying of the disease in the first nine months of last year.
AIDS was the third deadliest disease in China, but it has overtaken tuberculosis and rabies as the country's top killer in2008, according to the country's health ministry.
According to the health ministry's report, 34,864 people have died from AIDS since it was first detected in China in the 1980s. About 264,302 people in the country are infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS.
But some experts say those numbers are vastly underestimated.
The UN Joint Programme on HIV and AIDS estimates the real number of people in China living with HIV is about 700,000.
