<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->AIA SINGAPORE'S former boss, Mr Mark O'Dell, has been appointed as the new head of Manulife Financial's Taiwan operations.
The announcement from the Canadian insurer yesterday confirms a Straits Times report last week that stated that Mr O'Dell had the new job.
Ms Emil Lee, acting head of Manulife (International) in Taipei, said Mr O'Dell was likely to start at the end of next month, according to a Bloomberg report yesterday.
Mr O'Dell resigned from his post as executive vice-president and general manager of AIA Singapore on Sept 18 with immediate effect.
The shock departure came as AIA was facing a confidence crisis due to the financial problems besetting its parent AIG in the United States.
Thousands of anxious clients besieged its offices here, demanding surrender of their policies. The near-panic went on for a few days before some calm was restored.
It was in this turbulent period that Mr O'Dell, 50, quit.
AIA stated that his decision to leave was 'in no way related to the recent developments at AIG. It is a personal decision that he has been planning for some time'.
Mr O'Dell, who is on gardening leave for a month, joined AIG in 1993 and spent the past four years at AIA Singapore.
Mr Kenneth Juneau, executive vice-president and senior regional life executive of AIA's regional office, will run AIA Singapore until a permanent replacement for Mr O'Dell is found. LORNA TAN
