A bus plunged into a gorge in mountainous northern India on Monday, killing at least 25 people and injuring 24, police said.
The bus carrying 49 people went off the road as it tried to take a sharp curve, said Mubassir Latifi, superintendent of police.
It rolled nearly 300 feet (90 meters) into the gorge near Assar, a village 90 miles (150 kilometers) east of Jammu, the winter capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state, Latifi said.
Police recovered 21 bodies from the crash site, and four people died on the way to the hospital after the midday accident, he said.
Army helicopters moved 21 critically injured people to a hospital in Jammu after they first were taken to the hospital in Assar, Latifi said.
The other three injured were allowed to go home after treatment, he said.
As the critically injured were being moved to Jammu, angry relatives and residents threw stones at police and transport officials, complaining of inadequate medical facilities at the hospital in Assar, said Iftekhar Ahmad, the area's chief medical officer.
At least three police officers were injured in the scuffle, he said.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by aging vehicles, overloading and reckless driving on poorly maintained roads.
