Lah Wee Siong, 17, said he would take over the role of head of the household after his father's sudden death.
His father, 37-year-old lorry driver Mr Lah Lee Hock is believed to have suffered a heart attack after taking Ecstasy pills in a JB nightclub.
But last month, Wee Siong was sent to the Reformative Training Centre after committing a robbery in April.
Wee Siong's girlfriend, Felicia Ding, 18, said he had committed the robbery out of desperation because the family had no money. But she also defended him, saying that he had changed for the better and intended to take his O levels.
His 33-year-old mother Mrs Lah Li Yun could not be contacted.
In June, news reports quoted the family as saying that they took Ecstasy while on a night out clubbing in JB.
