<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->PARLIAMENT yesterday approved provisions for the coming fiscal year for the President's salary and other changes to the Civil List - which specifies his allowances and expenditure on the Istana and personal staff.
Total expenditure under Class 1 of the list - which includes the President's salary, entertainment allowance and Acting President's allowance - will now be $3,210,300.
This is a reduction of $822,800 over the approved expenditure for the current fiscal year.
Senior Minister of State (Finance) Lim Hwee Hua attributed this to a decrease in the presidential purse and a reclassification of the expenses for ceremonies and celebrations hosted by the President from Class 1 to Class 3 expenditure.
The Class 2 expenditure - for staff salaries - will be $3,823,400. This is a drop of $216,600 from the current fiscal year's approved expenditure because lower bonuses will be paid to staff as a result of the economic slowdown, she said.
Under Class 3 spending - for the maintenance of the Istana, vehicles, utilities and other supplies - an amount of $2,015,300 will be set aside.
This is an increase of $601,300, due to the reclassification of the expenses for ceremonies and celebrations, as well as an increase in maintenance and IT contract costs.
The Class 4 expenditure, which has to do with the purchase of services such as cars and office equipment, was also boosted. The new provision of $598,400 - an increase of $509,400 - is mainly to replace two state cars and a new document repository, said Mrs Lim.
