Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Afghanistan’s Taliban confirmed the capture of their deputy leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, saying he was seized by U.S.-led forces in southern Afghanistan.
A senior Taliban commander in the south of Afghanistan, Mullah Akhtar Mohammed, confirmed Baradar’s capture after the New York Times reported he had been detained in a joint Pakistani-U.S. raid in the city of Karachi.
Baradar, the chief lieutenant of the overall Taliban commander, Mullah Omar, has directed daily operations of the movement. Baradar “was captured by foreign troops on Sunday, along with some of his bodyguards, during the operation in Marjah,” a town in the southern province of Helmand where U.S. Marines are leading a drive against the guerrillas, said Mullah Abdul Qayum, a Taliban commander who also spoke by phone from an unspecified place in Afghanistan.
