SINGAPORE: Residents in the newly-redrawn Hong Kah North SMC and Chua Chu Kang GRC will get rejuvenated estates - to the tune of well-over S$450 million.
Under a five-year Town Renewal Plan, two new schools will also be constructed. A primary school will be built near Jurong West Street 75 and a school for students with special needs constructed at Choa Chu Kang Grove.
S$124.5 million will be spent on cyclical works for sprucing up ageing flats while S$2.6 million will go to large-scale projects, like a hub for the young and old to interact.
Other projects include resting pavilions, new jogging and cycling tracks and upgraded parks.
S$24.7 million will be for neighbourhood renewal, and S$19.1 million for improvement projects like sheltered walkways and vehicle drop-off porches.
The Keat Hong ward will also get a new community club by 2015. It will be located opposite the Lot 1 Shoppers' Mall and will offer facilities and programmes for the purpose of bonding residents.
Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong, who is also an MP for Chua Chu Kang, said: "The first thrust is looking at how we can improve the living environment for our people. How we can through upgrading, improve their homes, add new facilities, build the infrastructure to serve them better.
"The second thrust is on how we can build an active and vibrant community so that we roll out more programmes, create more space for our residents to socialise."
But there is always room to further aid residents.
New PAP candidate Ms Low Yen Ling said: "I think we can do more to help them improve the facilities, (for example) spalling concrete... in the toilet, kitchen (as well as) the windows and the doors, so as to ensure that the residents, especially the senior citizens, have a very safe environment to live in."
Fellow PAP candidate Mr Alex Yam said: "We can start expanding some of our roads to improve the transport and the traffic situation within the estate."
Also in the pipeline, more flats to undergo lift-upgrading and increasing the number of carpark lots.
