Admin executive jailed a year for embezzling $44,455

He was to pay the salaries of employees of B-Construction and BTL Trenchless Technologies but Tay Boo Kia pocketed $40,425 in August 2010. The 41-year-old also misappropriated $4,030 meant to pay for the hospitalisation of an employee.
Tay, who pleaded guilty on Feb 17, was jailed a year by a district court on Friday. He committed the offences in August 2010 while he was employed as a human resource cum administrative executive.
Court documents state that the accounts department would prepare cheques for the salaries and hand these to Tay. The cheques were not crossed.
For a worker with a bank accounts, the cheque would be made payable to him and Tay was to write the worker's bank account on the rear of the cheque, cross it and deposit it at the bank. Workers without bank accounts would be paid in cash.
