Chitchat Ad highlights discrimination against Kiwis in Australia

A leading figure of New Zealand business has taken out a full-page advertisement highlighting the difficulties Kiwis face in gaining Australian citizenship.

Former Herald proprietor Michael Horton paid for the advert in the Listener titled "Australia and New Zealand - a world apart".

Actually its the maoris the australians do not want. Others are ok to come.

The ad is misleading. Because of the special relationship between NZ and OZ, Kiwis are allowed to live and work in OZ without having to apply for permanent residency first. All other nationalities must first be granted PR before they can live and and work in Australia indefinitely.

However the right to live and work there does not entitle Kiwis to access the welfare system. This is reserved for PRs and citizens only which I think is perfectly fair.

Kiwis who are living in OZ who want to qualify for residency are on equal footing to any other nationality. What they want is to be able to bypass this queue or skip it entirely and be granted residency without having to qualify like everyone else.

Kiwis aren't being discriminated against at all. They are still being given preferential treatment because as long as they have no criminal record, they can travel in and out of OZ freely and stay as long as they want. No other nationality has this privilege.

Great info. Easier to get into nz as they are desperate, then move to australia to live and work. No? Maybe malays can claim maori descent to qualify as many are unskilled and unemployable.

NZ is not desperate for immigrants. They take those with money just as most other countries in the world do.
