Acquited of bribery attempt
By Khushwant Singh
<!-- end by line -->
TWO parking enforcement officers first said that they were offered all the money in a businessman's wallet to 'take back' a parking notice. Later, they changed their mind and said that they could not be exactly sure what Mr Lay Yun Wei said to them after they booked him for displaying a used parking coupon two years ago. Because of their flip-flops, District Judge Chia Wee Kiat acquitted Mr Lay, 36, on Friday. At the week-long trial that ended last month, it was revealed that parking enforcement officers Mohamed Effandy and Mohd Ali Ibrahim had issued Mr Lay a parking notice along Kim Yan Road on the night of Sept 18, 2007. Mohammed Effandy also testified that Mr Lay later said: 'You can take back this notice and I give you the money inside my wallet.' But the officer later admitted to defence lawyer Sant Singh that this was not what Mr Yap had said.
