Can anyone advise whether it is possible to obtain short to medium term accomodation in China at reasonable prices?
Looking at places in the south of china like Zhuhai or Zhongshan or Xiamen. Is it possible to rent an apartment without an visa? What are the charges? Or are there places like service apartments or hotels which offer clean yet fairly cheap accomodation for about 1 to 3 months?
Is it necessary to obtain a visa for trips of 90 days or less?

Thanks for any advice or comments.

Many place offer for short term. Even 2 day also can. Price about RMB2K for one month for apartment with one room facilities with washing machine and small cooking area.

look for global rental sites like this...haven't try it though but looks good...

http://www.sublet.cn/

for Zhuhai or Zhongshan, you don't need visa, since they are closed to Macau, you can always visit Macau for the famous Fried Pork Bun, and return to China every 14 days...

Why are you doing there for so long? Looking for your ideal PRC Baby?

No la, China is 30 day per entry/chop. Not 14 days. So very month just need to go to stamp one chop.

So entry into china without visa is only for maximum 30 days? I thought it was for 60 or 90 days?
For the short term apartment, is it possible to rent without a visa? In which city can you get such accomodation for RMB 2K a month? That sounds pretty reasonable.

Yes. it is for 30 days but can easily extend for another 30days up to max 90 days and you need to leave the country. You can do so at the city police station. I am in Chongqing and rental is much lower than 2k rmb. If you are looking for a studio apartment, it will cost you around 1k, 2 k can get you a 3 bedroom apartment in a pretty good location

Social visit pass is 30 days/chop. Since u intended to stay in Zhuhai/ZhongShan just travel to Macau once a month as a holiday trip. And come back. Just reapeat the process even 6 month also no problem. I have the experience.
Zhuhai will cost about RMB2K and Zhongshan even cheaper RMB1.5k( they even provide free cleaning service every 2 day/3 times a week).
May I know what u intended to do over there. Just asking no need to answer if not willing to share.
Can PM me give u some tip and ideas. U even can open bank account there with you passport.
China very big. So even same bank atm the bank will charge u a fee if u withdraw money out of the area. Let say u open account in Zhuhai and withdraw money in GuangZhou. There will be RMB10 charge/transaction. So do the phone. Outside the area they will be extra charge like roaming charge even u in China.
Hope some info can be helpful to u.

Is the apartment renting in Zhuhai and Zhongshan a service apartment or rented from a private individual?
How do you go about finding apartments from private individuals?

no. not necessary. But better if you can leave a local contact as reference esp if you are renting short. Normally short term lease start from 3months with an upfront deposit of normally 2k depending on the value of assets in the house. most would prefer to rent to someone who can commit more than 1 year.

Alternatively, you can stay in motel similar to hotel 81. they also have packages. But will cost about 30-50rmb daily depending on location and comfort. For this you must tell them u want a room for 1-3 months and work out the discount. If you rent daily they will not offer u this rates
