Military budget cut by Bt19 billion, arms procurement suspended
By The Nation
The military will suspend all plans for arms procurement in light of the austerity budget for 2010 and following a spending cut of Bt19 billion, Army chief General Anupong Paochinda said on Thursday.
The Army alone will see a budget reduction of Bt10 billion, Anupong said.
"There is no choice but to accommodate to the country's reality of hard times; there is no money and the military will have to survive without it," he said.
He said the military would have to make sacrifices and bear the brunt of the budget cut in order to free the funds for projects which have a direct impact on the people's livelihood.
The military training will have to conduct via the simulation technique instead of in the field and the armament will be repaired to extend its commission, he said.
In regard to arms procurement in the Army, the signed deal to purchase armoured vehicles from Ukraine will proceed but there will be no additional order for next year, he said.
