On reflection, he wonders if he was fair

I WONDER if I have been fair-minded and level-headed in putting all the societal ills and woes of today conveniently and squarely on the Government.

After all, the Government has guided the nation safely through the first part of a tumultuous journey fraught with minefields and undercurrents.

In a span of less than 50 years, the nation has morphed from a Third World economy to today's Singapore. The transformation, by any standard, has been remarkable, if not scintillating.

That being the case, government policies - purportedly, the source of vexation and woes for many - could not have been all that invidious and untenable.

Sure, the Government needs to quickly and assiduously tweak and update certain policies to better reflect the ever-changing expectations and demands of the populace. This will benefit the people materially and emotionally, resulting in better rapport and communication between the nation's stakeholders.

On the other hand, despite all the aforesaid, I do not know if I have allowed myself to be seduced by campaign slogans as old as the hills.
