A view from abroad
IT IS worth noting that what works for other countries (in particular Western democracies) does not necessarily work for Singapore, and what works for Singapore often does not work for others. (And who are you to judge? No examples, simple generalisation)
Call the model of government what you like (excuse me, i took Politics, your degree is Medicine, what do you know about what is government), it works for Singapore and has not gone unnoticed internationally. Many countries are gleaning ideas from Singapore's efficiency of systems, discipline of schools, reliability of health care and robustness of economic policy.(Assumption. Which country? How? When?)
I write as one who was born and bred in Singapore, and who has been a resident in Britain for nearly 20 years.(Who asked you to quit you loser? GOh Chok Tong calls you a Quitter!!)
A dear medical chum (both of us having done national service) recently shared his parental pride on hearing the motivated roar of recruits at a passing out parade at Marina Bay. Our national servicemen would move on to various camps, Officer Cadet School, civil defence and so on. I observed the need to spare a thought for similar parades in Britain, when parents would smile bravely as their sons (and daughters) received their postings to active duty in Afghanistan, Iraq and African states. (This tells you how fake our soliders are)
Singapore remains a safe, secure and sensible nation. Sound government matters. We should count our blessings. (You should come back you quitter.)
