A day in jail for salesman who stole Christmas songs
KUALA LUMPUR: A salesman was jailed a day and fined RM600 by a magistrate’s court here for stealing DVDs containing Christmas songs, toys and clothes. Koong Boon Chung, 30, from Perak, admitted stealing the items worth RM449 from the Jaya Jusco supermarket at MidValley Mega Mall here on Dec 13.
According to the facts of the case, security guard Mohd Saiful Nizam Affendi saw Koong acting suspiciously and followed him to observe his conduct. Mohd Saiful spotted Koong taking a few toys and go into a fitting room to put them inside a bag. He later took several DVDs and other items before going to the furniture section to keep them inside the bag.
Koong was stopped by the guard when he left the supermarket without making any payment. Pleading for leniency yesterday, his lawyer A. Krishna Veni said Koong had to support his elderly parents, a wife and two children. She said Koong’s father was a stroke patient while his mother suffered from diabetes.
She asked the court to consider that Koong was a first-time offender and sole breadwinner. DPP Muhamad Abu Hassan Ramli applied for appropriate sentence in view of public interest. Magistrate Aizatul Akmal Maharani jailed him a day and fined him RM600 in default 14 days’ jail. His wife paid the fine.
