12-DAY EXERCISE: Police's crime prevention operations a major success
KUALA LUMPUR: A SUSPENDED policeman was among nine robbery suspects nabbed during a district police station's intensive crime prevention operations recently.
The operation, initiated last month, was prompted by the increase in cases of armed robberies in recent months in the district, said district police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohan Singh Tara Singh yesterday.
It proved to be fruitful as in the course of the 12 day of operations, nine suspects were detained, including five who were planning to commit a robbery.
"The 33-year-old policeman, suspended for disciplinary reasons, was caught with an accomplice at Jalan Sultan Abdul Aziz on July 15.
"The two suspects, plus two others, had posed as cops and robbed a Myanmar family in Kampung Cheras Baru earlier at 3am, fleeing with RM2,500 cash, four mobile phones, and the family's Proton Wira."
"All the arrests were made during crime prevention operations between July 8 and July 19.
"Apart from armed robberies cases, other cases solved were house break-ins and car thefts," he said.
He added that weapons such as parang and iron rods were seized from the suspects, aged 19 to 50, apart from robberies victims' belongings, namely cars, mobile phones, identification documents, and house and car keys.
"Two armed robberies were also prevented in Taman Connaught and Taman Seri Bahtera here, as we managed to arrests suspects with their weapons beforehand," Mohan said.
He said the four suspects were found behaving suspiciously in a car near Taman Connaught on July 18.
They were nabbed after checks by police found three parang, a one-metre iron rod and a pair of scissors under the front passenger seat.
Meanwhile, on July 19, a 22-year-old parang-wielding suspect's attempt to rob a cafe in Taman Seri Bahtera here was foiled with the timely arrival of policemen, who promptly detained him.
