SINGAPORE: Police have carried out an island-wide crackdown on the support elements of loansharking, within the past 24 hours, resulting in the arrest of 86 persons for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
In the first phase, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police Intelligence Department smashed an unlicensed money-lending syndicate and arrested eight people.
The arrests were made in various parts of Singapore, including Bukit Panjang, Hougang, Pasir Ris, Tampines, Bedok and Jurong West.
Police seized loanshark-related paraphernalia consisting of a laptop, several mobile phones, ATM cards, bank transaction receipts, thumb drives and post cards used by the syndicate.
The suspects were believed to have assisted loansharking syndicates in the tracking and transfer of funds from debtors.
The second phase of the operation commenced at 4am on Thursday.
Officers from all six Police Land Divisions in Singapore arrested 78 people.
The arrests took place in various locations and housing estates across the island.
The suspects were believed to have allowed the use of their bank accounts for other loanshark syndicates.
