During his term as the party chief of the 2nd-strongest opposition party, his party had been elevated to a greater height. Many star candidates joined, instead of fled, his party. 7) His campaign led to concrete political change. Instead of harping on random political issues, he strategically focused on policies (such as HDB pricing and supply, Mah Bow Tan being MND minister, response to flash floods) that could be changed. As we had seen, the minister whom his campaign was directed at stepped down, policies to increase HDB supply affordability were quickly introduced, and flood-gates were installed in flood-prone areas such as Orchard Road. 8) He has the integrity to criticise both the ruling party and the opposition camp as long as there's a real problem. We need rational opposition leaders like Ah-Seng who don't blindly support based on party affiliation.

Smarter than CSJ?

He’s in a straight fight so I won’t begrudge anyone who wants to vote for him. I am glad that I won’t be voting in the ward he’s contesting; there’s no kick when the opposition is so pathetic, even if I vote for them.

But I don’t agree with the reasonings. 1 is redundant. Nearly every opposition candidate has good paper credentials. 2 is meaningless. That just says he’s been party-hopping.

3 is also meaningless. “All the elections” is only 2. In 2006 he rode on Sylvia and the Aljunied team which eventually won in 2011 because they did not have him in their team. In 2011 half the number of candidates got above 40%; if he couldn’t do that as a party gen sec contesting against the unpopular Mah, then he better off be dead.

4 is wrong because he has been living in HK most of the time.

5 is meaningless too. It’s not like speaking two main languages is rare.

6 is a stretch. NSP didn’t grow much under him and at the 11th hour it seems there would be no more than 15 candidates (about the same number as 2006 under SDA) but taking in a group of former RP and PKMS members increased that slate to 24.

7 is also a stretch. He wasn't the only one who campaigned against housing and floods; other opposition candidates did so to encourage people to vote out the PAP as a whole. He was concerned only voting out only Mah so that he can win, but at the expense of PAP appointing another MND minister doing the same silly mistakes.

8 is well, he certainly didn’t criticise out of integrity because he focused more on WP than PAP despite claiming to be more against PAP than WP/opposition. That’s personal grudge.
