Prosecutors in the southern province of Dong Nai Sunday ratified charges against eight people for their role in a deadly collision involving a train and six cars that killed two and injured 24 others last year.
Five railway workers – Tran Van Thoi, 28, Bui Van Thuan, 41, Nguyen Van Luong, 55, Tran Viet Hai, 21, and To Quang Toan, 41 – will be charged with dereliction of duty "leading to serious consequences,” according to the Bien Hoa Town People’s Procuracy, the local prosecutors' office.
Nguyen Van Tuy, 44, the train engineer, and Nguyen Xuan Phu, 48, his assistant, face charges of “violating railway driving regulations.”
Nguyen Minh Chau, 52, a taxi driver, will be charged with “obstructing rail traffic.”
On February 6, 2011, Toan was assigned to check the signal system on the Ghenh Bridge, but he failed to detect a broken light at the southern end.
The four other workers, who were in charge of the railroad crossing, failed to prevent the cars from driving on the bridge even though the northbound train frantically signaled to them.
Six cars, including Chau's taxi, that had entered the bridge despite the railway staff's warning, were stuck on the bridge when the train approached.
Prosecutors said that upon seeing the train coming near, Thuan asked Chau to give way, but he did not for a while and continued to block the other cars.
By the time he moved, the train arrived and smashed into the other cars.
The prosecutors also asked the police to investigate the role of six other people who were working on the train when the accident happened.
