SINGAPORE - Eight people aged between 28 to 62 have been arrested for six incidents of shop theft at a shopping mall along Syed Alwi Road.
Last month, the four men and four women tried to conceal unpaid items in bags that they brought with them.
Items ranging from toiletries to food costing $3.50 to $129 were found. The total value of stolen goods amounted to around $805.
If convicted, they will face a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.
The police warned the public and the retailers to practice vigilance during this festive period.
In the shopping areas, retailers have adopted wider aisles to allow greater visibility.
Crime prevention posters have also been placed at prominent areas and translated into different languages so tourists will be able to take heed.
The number of shop theft cases from Jan to Sep this year is 220, a drop from 317 cases last year.
