SINGAPORE - A 73-year-old man died in an accident in a Bedok confectionery on Monday (June 25).
Mr Ng Sew Kuang, the elderly owner of Ng Kian Seng Confectionery in Bedok, died after he fell into a dough-making machine while preparing red bean paste.
Workers who noticed a burning smell coming from the machines on the second-storey were shocked to find Mr Ng in the machine.
A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman told The New Paper that it responded to an incident at Block 17 Bedok South Road at 3.05pm.
A police spokesman said they were alerted at 3.06pm and a 73-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the workers identified the victim as her boss. In a feature on the confectionery in 2014, The Straits Times identified him as Mr Ng Sew Kuong.

The woman, who declined to be named, told TNP: “No one was around him when the incident took place, but a strong burning smell made us suspect something was wrong.”
Madam Zhu Xiao Wei, who works at the beauty salon next to the bakery, said Mr Ng’s daughter rushed into her salon to ask her to call for an ambulance.
“I thought it was a minor accident at first. I still can’t believe that he died,” she said.
Madam Zhu added that she was close with Mr Ng, whom she had known for about seven years.
“Being neighbours, we talk all the time. He was a very warm person and everyone here knew him. I’ve seen the machines upstairs before and they are all very big. I can’t imagine how his last moments must have felt, being trapped in one of them.”
In its 2014 feature, ST said that for the past 39 years, Mr Ng and his wife, Madam Lee Sai Kiow, started work every day at 4am and still made everything by hand and from scratch.
The bakery, started by Mr Ng’s paternal grandfather more than 70 years ago, is known for its traditional goodies, such as tau sar piah and wife cakes.

SINGAPORE - A 58-year-old woman died after an industrial accident in Admiralty on Monday (June 25).
According to Thyme Food and Services, the catering company she worked for, the accident involved a cargo hoist used to transport goods inside the unit occupied by the firm. The unit is on the seventh floor of the building, a strata-titled food processing facility.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they responded to an incident at 8A Admiralty Street at about 4.10pm. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, the spokesman said.
In response to queries, a police spokesman said they were alerted to a case of industrial accident at 4.04pm. Police are investigating the unnatural death, the spokesman added.
When The Straits Times arrived at the scene at around 6pm, police officers were seen on the roof, with police cordons around the unit.
An employee at a neighbouring unit, who declined to be named, told ST that her colleague had helped to move a decapitated body after the incident involving a "lift" inside the unit. She added that the "lift" was used by the catering company to transport goods.

At around 8.30pm, the body of the employee was removed from the unit.

Mr Lawrence Hee, 44, a director of the catering company, said that the employee helped with bookkeeping and procurement and was very responsible, often going beyond the call of duty.
The staff member, who had previously worked for Mr Hee’s other wellness company for seven years, joined the catering firm after she was made redundant two years ago. She was married with children and grandchildren, he said.
Mr Hee said that he did not know what she was doing near the cargo hoist in the kitchen.
“She would really watch your back and go beyond her normal duties. She shouldn’t be anywhere near the hoist but she went to help with something when the accident happened,” said Mr Hee, who declined to comment on how it happened, citing ongoing investigations.
Choking back tears, Mr Hee said: “She and her husband were very close... I will need to face the family and offer them whatever support they need.”
The building, Food Xchange, has 283 units housing tenants that include Imperial Treasure Restaurant, Da Paolo Ristorante Italiano, and Black Ball Singapore.
ST has contacted the building management and the Ministry of Manpower for more information.

I suspect it is suicide by dough making machine. He probably had depression because of high rent and low returns from low margins due to competition from JB. RIP Mr Ng, you are now in a better place.

he wanted every customer to have a little bit of memorabilia of him when they bite into the bun.

soylent green concepts undergoing test-marketing in sg?

The whities are doing trail runs...for there is a huge band of old but have to go in that band. The next door Ah Tiong Bu hairdresser, who had known him for seven years must be making him tired, she was helping him to blow the 'lap cheong' while he kneaded the 'dough' for his sausage in the bun sold at the bakery.

One day, we will have a Charlie Hou San, shouting as her was led away..." Soylent Green is people"!

Yes highly admirable, that he should put his customers first. Evident by his choice. Such customer service is rare these days.

There is a better way to die??? It may be a cliche but the phrase "He died doing what he loved" is most appropriate here.
